Girona Ends Winless Streak with Victory Over Las Palmas
Girona has finally returned to winning ways after four consecutive losses in La Liga and the Champions League securing a crucial 2-0 victory over Las Palmas at Montilivi. This result boosts their chances in the European race, placing them seventh just one point behind the surprising Rayo Vallecano.
Girona Controls First Half but Struggles in the Second
The Catalan side dominated the first half with a dynamic performance, particularly through the efforts of Brian Gil and Miguel Gutierrez. Their attacking movements created early chances and put immense pressure on the Las Palmas defense.
AS reported that Yanhel Herrera’s brilliant pass to Abel Ruiz in the eighth minute led to an early goal that was later ruled offside. Despite this, Girona continued pushing forward, creating multiple scoring opportunities. Abel came close again following a cross from Luis Suarez, and Arnau’s free kick barely missed the target at the 32nd minute.
The breakthrough came in the 34th minute, when Abel finally found the net, this time legally, taking advantage of Miguel Gutierrez’s precise delivery. Las Palmas goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen made an outstanding save against Brian Gil’s weak shot in the 35th minute, keeping his team in the game.
VAR Decision Awards Penalty but Cillessen Shines
Just before halftime, Girona was awarded a penalty after a VAR review spotted a dangerous elbow from Mackina on Yanhel Herrera. Initially unnoticed, the challenge was later reviewed and confirmed by referee Melero Lopez. However, Cillessen showcased his penalty-saving skills, once again stopping Abel Ruiz’s well-placed shot towards the left post.
According to Marca, Las Palmas has now seen four of their last eight penalties saved this season, highlighting a concerning trend for the team.
Las Palmas Awakens in the Second Half
Despite their first-half struggles, Las Palmas started the second half with renewed energy. The Canarian side, led by key players like Alberto Moleiro and Fabio Silva, tried to take control of the game. They launched several dangerous attacks, but Girona’s defense, led by Paulo Gazzaniga, remained solid.
New signing Stefan Bajcetic made his debut coming off the bench for Las Palmas. He showed composure in midfield but struggled to influence the game significantly. Girona, on the other hand, managed the final minutes effectively, securing the much-needed victory.
Canarias7 noted that the "Martínez Effect," which had previously revived Las Palmas' form, appears to be fading, as the team failed to respond effectively to Girona's dominance.
Girona Back in the European Race
With this win, Girona moves closer to the European qualification spots, boosting their confidence ahead of upcoming fixtures. The victory also ends a worrying losing streak and restores momentum in their campaign.
